NRG Oncology Pilot Grant to Study Risk-Guided Cardio-Oncology Referral in Lung Cancer Survivors Following Thoracic Radiotherapy

Aiming to improve cardiovascular outcomes, this study, led by Lilli Zhang, MD, develops a risk-stratification approach for lung cancer survivors post-radiotherapy.

Thoracic radiotherapy plays a vital role in lung cancer treatment, but it also leads to a high prevalence of cardiovascular disease among survivors. Currently, there is a significant gap in the effective risk stratification of these patients, and as a result, referrals to cardio-oncology specialists are not as common as they should be. The initiative focuses on developing a comprehensive approach that combines routine clinical data and imaging to effectively assess the risk for lung cancer survivors following thoracic radiotherapy, thereby ensuring timely and appropriate referrals to specialized cardio-oncology clinics. The primary goal of this initiative is to enhance the cardiovascular health of lung cancer survivors who have undergone thoracic radiotherapy.
