Dario F. Riascos-Bernal, MD, PhD, Appointed Standing Member of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Study Section

Montefiore Einstein’s Dario F. Riascos-Bernal, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor in Medicine (Cardiology) and Developmental and Molecular Biology, has been appointed as a standing member of the NIH Center for Scientific Review for the Atherosclerosis and Vascular Inflammation study section.

Dario F. Riascos-Bernal, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor of Medicine (Cardiology) and Developmental and Molecular Biology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, has recently accepted an invitation from the NIH Center for Scientific Review to join the AVI study section of the Integrative Vascular Biology and Hematology Review Branch (IVBH) of the Division of Translational and Clinical Sciences (DTCS) as a standing member for a four-year term, beginning July 2024. This prestigious appointment recognizes Dr. Riascos-Bernal's expertise and exceptional achievements in vascular biology and cardiovascular medicine. Standing members are carefully chosen for their demonstrated achievements in their scientific disciplines, such as the quality of their research, publications in scientific journals, honors and important contributions in their fields.

As a vascular biologist, Dr. Riascos-Bernal is a recognized authority in the field, tackling significant knowledge gaps in vascular biology. His research focuses on discovering novel molecular mechanisms that control the activities of vascular smooth muscle and endothelial cells in atherosclerosis, plaque erosion and rupture, and the arterial response to injury as observed after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI)

In this new role, Dr. Riascos-Bernal will evaluate the scientific merit of grant applications as a peer reviewer, helping to shape the future of research in vascular biology and related areas. The AVI study section reviews applications focused on blood vessel pathobiology, such as vascular system inflammation, atherosclerosis and aortic aneurysms. There is an emphasis on macrophage, endothelial and smooth muscle cell biology, immune cells and metabolic disorders. The vascular effects of major risk factors such as diabetes, liver disease, obesity, hyperlipidemia, aging and smoking are considered. Most research studies use animal systems and cell cultures integrated with human subject approaches.

Dr. Riascos-Bernal’s NIH appointment reflects Montefiore Einstein’s ongoing leadership in cardiovascular research and commitment to advancing human health.

Dario F. Riascos-Bernal, MD, PhD, is Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine (Cardiology) and the Department of Developmental and Molecular Biology, Wilf Family Cardiovascular Research Institute at Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
