Honoring Elizabeth M. Alderman, MD

At AAP 2024, CHAM’s Elizabeth Alderman, MD, Chief and Professor, Adolescent Medicine, led the “Recognition, Evaluation, Treatment, and Referral of Common Gynecological Disorders” workshop today at AAP. This workshop focused on menstrual disorders, including heavy periods in teens as well as common gynecological disorders in children and adolescents. The session was part of the AAP Passport to Pediatric Medical Subspecialties Pilot Program.

Clinical cases will be used to review common gynecological disorders in children and adolescents, including common causes of vaginitis as well as menstrual disorders. Faculty will discuss evaluation and best practices associated with treatment and discuss criteria/conditions for referral to subspeciality care.

On March 20, 2024, Elizabeth Alderman, MD, was elected chair of the Executive Committee of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Council on Adolescents and Young Adults (CoAWA). Dr. Alderman's two-year term began July 1, 2024. In this role, Dr. Alderman will write policies and clinical and technical reports, create and execute educational activities and advocate for adolescent health.

On May 21, 2024, Elizabeth Alderman, MD, was selected by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to serve on an expert panel to revise the 2021 Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) Treatment Guidelines. In this role, Dr. Alderman will review the current guidelines and provide input for new guideline development.

From May 21-22, 2024, Elizabeth Alderman, MD, moderated a session and presented a plenary talk, entitled "Menstrual Bleeding in Adolescents - Too Much or Too Often" at the Tenth Annual Adolescent Health Conference in Kampala, Uganda. Dr. Alderman also served as a panelist at this meeting, which was attended by adolescent health care providers, psychologists, social workers, teachers, and youth from Uganda and other countries in Africa.
