HIGHLIGHTS

Montefiore Einstein One of Three Sites Participating in Trial Addressing Timing of Radiation Therapy in Patients with Resectable Brain Metastases

Montefiore Einstein is actively enrolling patients in a multicenter clinical trial to investigate whether targeted radiation, administered before or after surgical tumor resection, yields better results in eligible patients with brain metastases.

Led by Celina Crisman, MD, MPH, Adilia Hormigo, MD, PhD, and Vijay Agarwal, MD, as principal investigators, Montefiore Einstein is one of three health systems in New York State selected to participate in a randomized, multicenter, phase III trial comparing neoadjuvant preoperative to postoperative stereotactic radiosurgery in patients with resectable brain metastases.

This interdisciplinary trial involves the collaboration of our world-renowned neurosurgeons and radiation oncologists. Stereotactic radiosurgery is a type of targeted radiation therapy that precisely delivers a high dose of radiation to focal areas of brain cancer that are hard to reach or treat, avoiding surrounding, normal brain tissue. Radiation therapy before surgery theoretically may shrink the tumor or stop it from growing, increase tumor resectability, reduce the number of cancer cells, sterilize microscopic disease preoperatively and may reduce symptoms of brain metastases. Montefiore Einstein has a robust translational research program for brain tumors and is actively involved in numerous clinical trials for brain cancer, providing access to emerging treatment that is otherwise unavailable.

We’re ranked in the top one percent of all U.S. hospitals for cancer care and among the highest performing centers in the nation for neurology and neurosurgery, according to U.S. News & World Report, and are among the elite one percent NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the U.S.
