Dexamethasone Use Associated with Decreased 1-Year Postoperative Mortality and Reduced Cancer Recurrence for Patients Undergoing Oncological Surgery

Researchers at Montefiore Medical Center and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center have found an association between intraoperative dexamethasone administration and postoperative mortality for patients undergoing oncological procedures. The researchers analyzed data from more than 30,500 adult patients who underwent solid cancer resection during the period 2005 to 2020 and who were not candidates for immune modulators. They found that dexamethasone – a medication used to prevent nausea and vomiting after surgery – is associated with decreased mortality and a reduced risk of cancer recurrence within one year of surgery. This publication is an important contribution to the body of literature analyzing the association between intraoperative dexamethasone use and postoperative outcomes.
