New Residency Program Director Leads with Focus on Wellness and Mentorship

Dr. Erik Romanelli, Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology at Montefiore Einstein, was appointed Anesthesiology Residency Program Director in July 2023 and has since led initiatives to improve resident wellness, mentorship, and curriculum development.

Dr. Romanelli is a core member of the Obstetric Anesthesia Division and has built upon the exemplary work of immediate past Residency Program Director Dr. Sujatha Ramachandran, who currently serves as Vice Chair of Education.

In his new role, Dr. Romanelli is focused on several projects including optimizing resident and attending evaluations, creating a more robust wellness plan for trainees, and a revision of the new resident selection criteria. One of his first goals is to create a comprehensive mentorship program in which junior residents, senior residents, and faculty can support one another in their personal and professional goals. In spearheading these projects, Dr. Romanelli will lead the new Education Steering Committee, which includes Attending Anesthesiologist Dr. Giselle Jaconia and Director of the Critical Care Anesthesiology Division Dr. Bill Sauer.

Dr. Jaconia as well as Attending Anesthesiologist Dr. Jay Im – also an alumnus of the Montefiore Anesthesiology Residency Program – have been appointed Assistant Directors of the program. They are working together with Dr. Romanelli – as well as Residency Curriculum Director Dr. Angela Vick and Graduate Medical Education (GME) Administrator Debbie Lopez – on an enhanced intraoperative teaching plan, subspecialty rotation standardization, resident recruitment, and GME governance.

A faculty member since 2019, Dr. Romanelli is a graduate of the Montefiore Einstein Anesthesiology Residency Program, which fueled his desire to give back to the program where he trained.

“As a resident alum, I take great pride in the health and stability of our residency and want our residents to feel an unparalleled level of academic and clinical preparedness upon completion of the program,” Dr. Romanelli said. “I strongly believe that the continued success of our residency will come from our embracing of innovation, steady and reliable recruitment of intellectually diverse trainee classes, and a heightened awareness of the expectations and demands of the ever-changing landscape that our graduates will enter.”

Prior to becoming Residency Program Director, Dr. Romanelli served as Director of the Obstetric Anesthesia Resident Rotation. In addition, he has served as Chair of the program’s Clinical Competency Committee and has been a core teaching faculty member for the Obstetric Anesthesiology Fellowship Program. His fervor for education was recognized as the recipient of the department’s Excellence in Teaching Award in 2022.

Department of Anesthesiology Chair Dr. Matthias Eikermann said he is confident in Dr. Romanelli’s ability to lead the department’s educational endeavors in line with the mission of the department.

“Dr. Romanelli has an unmatched energy and enthusiasm for teaching,” Dr. Eikermann said. “He has a demonstrated record of clinical excellence and is one of our department’s most engaging and effective educators who understands the importance of creating a sense of community and utilizing innovative teaching methods.”

A leader at the regional and national level, Dr. Romanelli serves on the American Society of Anesthesiologists Educational Track Subcommittee on Obstetric Anesthesia and the New York State Society of Anesthesiologists Committee on Pain Management. He is an annual abstract reviewer for the Society for Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology as well as the NYSSA PostGraduate Assembly. Dr. Romanelli received his Doctor of Medicine and Master’s in Public Health from Tulane University. After graduating from residency at Montefiore Einstein, he completed the Obstetric Anesthesiology Fellowship Program at New YorkPresbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center. He subsequently returned to Montefiore, where he has served as an attending anesthesiologist and Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology for the last five years.
