Welcome to our 2021 Highlights. In a period of global health crisis and societal unease, I could not be more proud of the faculty, staff and trainees of our department who have risen to the challenges of the time with an unrelenting and inspiring commitment to patient care, teaching and research informed and propelled by their far-ranging knowledge and skills, creative drive and values of social justice.

Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research top 50 NIH-funded departments of psychiatry ranking
Thanks to the growing activities of our Psychiatry Research Institute, our department has more than doubled its NIH-funded activity during the past year, placing us among Blue Ridge’s top 50 NIH-funded departments of psychiatry in the US. The translational partnership with the Department of Neuroscience, ranked #19 in the nation, reflects a critical synergy on behalf of individuals with mental illness and addiction.
Sandra Pimentel, PhD, announced President-Elect of the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies (ABCT)
Dr. Pimentel is Chief of Child and Adolescent Psychology at Montefiore Einstein. The ABCT, founded in 1966, is one of the foremost multidisciplinary organizations for mental health professionals involved in research, prevention and treatment, grounded in evidence-based behavioral, cognitive and biological principles.
Research Review
Improving care and outcomes through research
In 2021, our department made robust contributions in research spanning a variety of topics. Members of our team published on the advancement of knowledge into COVID-19, addressing race and racism and understanding health disparities, psychiatric conditions across the life span and translational insights about psychiatric disorders, among others.
